Identifier types

Littledata uses several key identifiers to track user behavior and order data on Shopify. These identifiers help capture essential details across sessions, devices, and marketing campaigns. Here’s a quick overview of the main client IDs:

  1. _google-clientID Unique anonymous identifier that tracks users across sessions and devices, linking their actions to Google Analytics. It ensures that user behavior is consistently mapped in GA4, helping merchants understand the full user journey.
  2. _ga4session-clientID This ID represents a unique session. It helps Littledata track session-based activities such as product views and checkouts, providing insights into how users interact with your store during each visit.
  3. _up-clientID Used for advanced identity resolution, _up-clientID ensures accurate tracking of users across multiple devices, offering a more complete picture of customer behavior.
  4. _gclid-clientID Captures the Google Click ID (GCLID) from Google Ads campaigns, enabling proper attribution of orders and other key events to specific paid ads.

How these IDs work together

When a user places an order, these client IDs collectively track the customer’s journey—from ad click to checkout. _google-clientID and _up-clientID identify the user, _ga4session-clientID records their session, and _gclid-clientID attributes the sale to a Google Ad campaign.

If you uninstall the Littledata app, you may see some orders still come in with our cart attributes for the next few days. That’s because these orders were created from carts that were created before you uninstalled the app. These cases should even out a few days after uninstalling the app.
